The U.S. Navy has been issuing denim workwear since the turn of the century. This shawl collar jacket is a World War I-period example. While there are slight differences in stitching compared to later variations, the true beauty of this piece lies in the stenciling. The initials on the cuffs may represent the sailor's name. The stencil on the back identifies an Air Force base in Minnesota. It also features incredible fading. While white stencils are common on denim, black is rare, which is intriguing to me.
