This is a Wabash polka dot shirt with coverall-like pockets, which is believed to have been worn primarily by railroad workers.
Unlike the workwear worn by other workers, Railroaders took pride in wearing a uniform that was designed to be seen. The indigo fabric was printed with irregular dots using a discharge dyeing method. These irregular dots, rather than neat polka dots, are reminiscent of the indigo discharge dyeing technique of the time. There were two types of uniforms, a collarless type and a round collar, which railroad workers could choose depending on their job.
