This is because, in an era when the technology of old-fashioned power looms called shuttle looms was still in its infancy, skipping the weft thread over long distances increased the risk of weaving defects and other problems. Because the bandana is narrow, instead of splitting two pieces horizontally, it is split into a single piece, resulting in selvedge on both sides. The indigo fabric also features a noticeable fade.
